Committee System
The week by week work of the congregation is undertaken by the various committees and the chairperson of the congregation. The chairperson of each of the committees along with the officers of the congregation, the minister(s) and our representatives to Kingston Presbytery of the United Church of Canada, make up the Executive Committee. The congregation has the ultimate authority to make major decisions and has regular quarterly congregational meetings, and occasional special meetings, to do so.
Christian Education --coordinates and initiates Christian Education for all ages Community Services--responsible for coordinating and packing Christmas baskets for needy families, and budgets money for other outreach projects in the community such as the Helen Tufts Tutorial Program Congregational Fellowship--a working committee that is in charge of coffee hour after church, and potluck suppers Finance--concerned with budgeting and informing the congregation of our financial position throughout the year Ministry & Personnel--acts as a support group for the ministerial staff and relates to all staff--is in charge of job descriptions and salaries Mission & Service--publicizes and promotes the mission and service fund of the United Church Pastoral Care--visits seniors, delivers flowers, organizes Fellowship Teas, delivers newsletters, oversees the cradle roll & name tag programs Property, Use & Occupation--concerned with the maintenance and use of the church building Special Events--organizes fundraising and non-fundraising events such as dinner/dances, variety nights, speakers, etc. Worship--considers and discusses the worship services, special speakers etc. and is part of the Tri-Church Worship Committee
Our Role in the Presbytery
Sydenham Street United Church is an active member of the Kingston Presbytery of the United Church of Canada. In the past, we have been honoured to help with the formation of other United Churches in the area and we support coordinated efforts to respond to the outreach and program needs of the area's congregations and residents.
