| SSUC’s Season of Lent for 2008 February 6 – March 22 Adding Our Voices to A Song of Faith |
||||
Adding Our Voices to A Song of Faith This year’s Lenten worship focus will be A Song of Faith, the newest expression of faith approved by the General Council of The United Church of Canada in August 2007. A Song of Faith is longer than traditional statements of faith, more poetic and richer in imagery and metaphor. It is offered to the church not in an attempt to homogenize our faith experiences, perspectives or expressions, but rather to create space to acknowledge and include the wide diversity that we are in The United Church of Canada. Each Sunday during Lent we will focus on one section. Getting Involved in Martha’s Table Extra Measures Initiative. In January, Kingston Presbytery took on a new Extra Measures Initiative (the first local EMI) and made the commitment to raise $20,000 to help Martha’s Table pay down its mortgage on the former restaurant at 629 Princess St. which Martha’s Table purchased a year ago. In this new location, Martha’s Table is able to serve meals to significantly more people and has reunited its meal and friendship programmes. Understandably operating costs have increased. One of the most effective ways to turn this around is to eliminate the mortgage. In approving this Extra Measures Initiative, Kingston Presbytery made the choice to help Martha's Table do just that. Kingston Presbytery represents and includes all of us United Church folk Sunday, February 24/08 the Rev. Dr. Millard Schumacher, active volunteer and board member of Martha’s Table and professor emeritus of Queen’s Theological College will be our guest preacher. We will have the opportunity to learn more about Martha’s Table and contribute to this Extra Measures Initiative. Special envelopes will be available to those who would like to receive a tax receipt.
